NLP backed candidate wins seat

ballot-box-largeAn independent candidate backed by the National Liberal Party (NLP) has won a Council seat.  Michael Burton topped the poll with 661 votes. His closest rival came a comfortable margin behind.

The NLP and Third Way were criticised by ‘Nutzis’ and extremists for backing Michael just because he is black. To be fair, the BNP itself did not target or attack Michael.

They fought a clean campaign. We support Michael because he is the best man for the job – and the voters have agreed! Good to see that so many saw beyond mere skin colour and voted for a positive policy agenda.

Michael tells us he aims to represent everyone in the ward to the best of his ability, including those who voted for the British National Party. He says he will listen to them and deal sympathetically with any genuine local concerns as he will those who voted for other Parties.

Full results for the South Hornchurch (Havering by-election) are:-

NLP backs Indpendent for South Hornchurch

BallotThe councillor for South Hornchurch in Havering recently passed away. Representing the RA’s he was a genuine ‘People’s Champion’ devoting his whole life in service to the community but his sad death has of course generated a vacancy.

A by-election has been called (by persons presently unknown – on the day of his funeral!) for July 3rd. The local National Liberal Party (NLP), as part of the Peoples Alliance, agreed not to stand a candidate but will instead support an Independent.

The candidate, Michael Burton, stood for the Peoples Alliance (with two other independents), two years ago in the Borough elections. He and his colleagues were only a 100 or so votes off being elected.

National Independents Week

nlpThe Federation of Wholesale Distributors, as part of the all-year round MY SHOP IS YOUR SHOP

The campaign is based on the positive values of the owner-managed local shop and his/her unique interface with the local community, where the owner lives “over the shop” and shares the daily life of his neighbourhood. It aims to encourage the shopper to support their local independent retailer.

The campaign will be supported by the National Liberal Party (NLP)who will be running stalls and leafleting shoppers.

David Durant of the NLP said:-

“We must support the local trader or they will eventually die out. Then we will all have to shop out of town and community spirit will be eroded. Shoppers can show their support for local traders by paying an extra visit and spending an extra few pounds in their community shop”.

One Small Step for the NLP

The British National Party are to be congratulated on their win in the Gooshays by-election last night. All the candidates should be thanked, despite the temptations, for running clean, positive and energetic campaigns on local issues.

Although all parties outside the Lab-BNP fight were ‘squeezed’, we in the National Liberal Party are pleased with our result. Despite being relatively unknown in the ward and fighting our first election on the Hill we still defeated the nationally known Liberal Democrats. This is just one small step in our initial aim to ‘Reclaim liberalism’ by making the National Liberals more popular than the the Liberal Democrats who lack our desire to preserve and develop our cultural identity and national independence.

The full results were:

Yve Cornell (Labour) 741 (32.5%)

David Durant (NLP) 62 (2.7%)

Malcom Fox (Con.) 489 (21.5%)

Mark Logan (BNP) 865 (37.9%)

Ian Sanderson (Lib Dem) 52 (2.2%)

Lawrence Webb (UKIP) 70 (3%)

Cllr. Jeff Tucker Appeals To RA's

Councillor Jeffrey Tucker, Group Leader of the Independent Residents on Havering Council, has endorsed the National Liberal Party candidate David Durant in Havering’s forthcoming Gooshays By-election (March 20th).

In a specially produced leaflet for the ward Councillor Tucker says to local voters “David Durant has supported me and my group in fighting to protect the council taxpayer and the borough’s local shops and communities. I urge you to make a difference to Harold Hill by voting for value for money and to defend Council Housing by voting David Durant”.

He is also appealing to those who voted for the Residents Association two years ago to switch to the NLP in the absence of an RA Candidate.

David Durant said “I’m delighted to accept Cllr. Tucker’s support and if elected i will work closely with his group who act as the real opposition to this Council Administration”.

Close fight predicted in Havering

On Maundy Thursday there will be an interesting local election in Gooshays Ward for Havering Borough Council. It will be a close fight between Labour and the British National Party.

In May 2006 just 3.6% separated Labour, the Tories and the BNP, and this time around it looks like being another close-run contest. This time, however, there were three seats up for election in the ward and while Labour and the Tories put up three candidates each, the BNP only fielded one which gave their single candidate advantage.

We think that Labour will win the seat this time.

The National Liberal Party (closest to Third Way views) is standing as are the Liberal Democrats and the United Kingdom Independence Party candidate who polled nearly 400 votes back in May 2006. It is a tough ward for the NLP but David Durant has been campaigning hard on the issue of maintaining council housing.
